Lord John Prescott

Lord John Prescott

Best known for:

John was Britain's longest serving Deputy Prime Minister and a key player in the Blair Government, as well as being the advisor to Chinese government on sustainable development during his tenure.

Summary:

John Prescott rose from ship's steward to Deputy Prime Minister, via a degree in economics and a spell in the European Parliament. Perhaps his most significant achievement was to lead negotiations at Kyoto, resulting in the first international treaty on climate change. John Prescott is recognised for his passionate interest in regeneration, and particularly housing. He is continuing to advise the Chinese government on their plans to build a thousand new 'sustainable' cities.

Biography:

John attended the University of Hull where he studied economics and politics and gained a BSc in economics and economics history. John was a member of the National Union of Seamen and a Cunard ship’s steward and union official before he became an MP for his constituency Hull East. John was also a member of the European parliament and has led the Labour group.

Famous for his position as Deputy Prime Minister, John played a vital role in the Labour government as he was also in charge of the brand new Department for Environment, Transport and Regions. John has strong views on climate change and made it his mission to encourage the UK to take climate change seriously; he also developed a good relationship with Al Gore. He toured the UK speaking to school children about climate change in an attempt to encourage change in the next generation. Now that he no longer works in parliament he spends much of his time public speaking and he has also spoken to the Chinese government about their idea to create sustainable cities.

During his time in Parliament, John was not averse to controversy and is well remembered for punching a farmer after he viciously threw an egg at him at the time of the 2001 election.
