Jonathan is a founding partner and Chief Editor of Variant Perception, a global macroeconomic trading and research group which provides a unique view on financial markets. He is the co-author of Endgame: The End of the Debt Supercycle, which was in the best-seller lists of the NY Times and the Wall Street Journal. He speaks widely on the global economy, and is frequently quoted by CNBC, Bloomberg, NY Times, and other publications.
Biography:
John is the co-author of the NY Times bestseller Endgame: The End of the Debt Supercycle, a book on the sovereign debt crisis, and the Wall Street Journal bestseller Code Red: How to Protect Your Savings form the Coming Crisis, a book on unconventional monetary policy. John is also a founder of Variant Perception, a macroeconomic research group that caters to asset managers. John is a Rhodes Scholar, and since leaving Oxford has worked as an equity analyst at SAC Capital and as a Vice President in proprietary trading at Bank of America. With his friend and partner Turi Munthe, he founded Demotix, a citizen-journalism website and photo agency that takes photographs from freelance journalists and amateurs and markets them to the mainstream media. Demotix was sold in 2012 to Corbis, a Bill Gates owned company.
John claims to have always been a nerd; he earned a BA with Highest Honors in Economics (his honors thesis was on optimal currency area theory and the symmetry of economic shocks to the labor market in Europe) and History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a M.Litt. in Modern History from Oxford University.
Jonh grew up in San Blas, a neighborhood of Madrid that had one of the highest rates of drug use in Europe. His parents started Betel International, a drug rehabilitation center that has grown from one addict in 1985 to almost 3,000 addicts in 25 countries. As a child almost all John's friends were heroin addicts and ex-convicts and most were HIV+.
John loves jazz, photography, learning languages, reading far too many books and drinking far too much coffee.
