Biography:
Ann Widdecombe may have been 'the people's choice' to become Speaker of the House of Commons, but the MPs weren't ready for her. With a personality guaranteed to make her a hit with the tabloid press, 'Doris Karloff' acquired her nickname by describing her former boss Michard Howard as having 'something of the night' about him.
Ann's political career included both Ministerial and Shadow positions before she decided to make her presence felt from the backbenches. Away from Westminster, Ann is devoting more time to her interests outside party politics - after fronting documentaries on prostitution, truancy, girl gangs and cosmetic surgery. She also continues to publish novels.
After dinner Ann reflects on the highs and lows - and perhaps the only occasion on which she lost her Christian principles. She welcomes questions from the audience, dealing with them as only a politician can - by tackling the underlying reason for the question.
Miss Widdecombe published her first novel The Clematis Tree in April 2000 which became a best seller. Since then she has written a further three novels.
She has enjoyed participating in various television programmes including her own prime time television show on BBC2, ‘Ann Widdecombe to the Rescue’. She has also contributed to many other programmes on a wide range of subjects including travel, politics and religion. Ann has also appeared as a guest presenter on television in place of Richard Littlejohn and on radio in place of Nick Ferrari.
As well as Television and Radio Miss Widdecombe had built up a strong reputation in the print media mainly as a columnist for several newspapers. She is currently a weekly columnist for the Daily Express.
In October 2010 she participated in the highly popular BBC show Strictly come Dancing, partnered with Anton du Beke.
